- Usualmente el Inversor Ángel aparece ante aquellas empresas innovadoras, sobre todo en tecnología donde las probabilidades de crecer y ser exitosa pueden ser igual de grandes que las de fracasar. En promedio se estima que de estas empresas solo el 20% logra mantenerse a flote, por lo que implica una inversión del todo o nada.
Un Inversor Ángel no es solo una persona que deposita dinero, es también un emprendedor o un empresario exitoso que no se conforma con aportar capital como una simple inversión financiera, su idea es también participar en transformar y convertir en realidad a este tipo de empresas. Aportan desde su experiencia y conocimientos dentro y fuera del proyecto; ayudando, asesorando, aconsejando e incluso brindando sus contactos. Un grupo de Inversores Ángeles puedes estar formado por personas de diferentes perfiles, logrando de esta forma la posibilidad de que el proyecto sea exitoso e incluso disminuyendo el riesgo.
Para algunos este tipo de acción es una forma de diversificar sus inversiones, pero para la mayoría es como continuar por otro camino. Toda la experiencia que poseen, puede ser depositada en un emprendimiento que lo necesite y generando beneficios para muchas partes. Un proyecto exitoso significa que se dinero será rentable, que la empresa crecerá, que el día de mañana podrá generar empleos y así sigue esta cadena.
¿Cómo surgieron los Inversores Ángeles?
El término surgió a principios de 1900 cuando se refería a personas que invertían en producciones teatrales en Broadway. Este tipo de proyectos implicaba grandes riesgos, pero en caso de ser exitosos podrían generar importantes ganancias. La actual definición es que un Inversor Ángel es una persona que invierte en un proyecto para agregarle valor, no solo de recursos financieros, sino también de experiencia, contactos y conocimientos de management”
Lo que hoy en día se conoce como una gran empresa, seguramente tuvo sus inicios gracias a la ayuda de este tipo de inversores.

Un inversor angel (conocido como Business Angel en Europa o simplemente “angel”) es un individuo próspero que provee capital para un start-up, usualmente a cambio de participación accionaria. Los ángeles típicamente invierten sus propios fondos, no como las entidades de capital de riesgo (o venture capitalists), quienes administran profesionalmente dinero de terceros a través de un fondo. Un incremental número de ángeles inversores se están organizando en redes, grupos o clubes de ángeles para compartir esfuerzos y unir sus capitales de inversión.
El capital angel cubre el espacio, en la financiación de un negocio naciente, entre las “tres F’s” (iniciales en inglés de familiares, amigos y tontos) (family, Friends, and fools) de capital semilla y un Venture Capital. Mientras que es difícil conseguir más de U$S100.000 de familiares y amigos, la mayoría de las entidades de capital de riesgo no consideran inversiones menores a US$1 millón (varia dependiendo el país). Por lo tanto, las inversiones ángeles es normalmente la segunda ronda de financiamiento para Start-ups de alto potencial de crecimiento, y en EEUU representa más dinero invertido anualmente que todas las entidades de capital de riesgo sumadas (US$25,6 billones vs. $25 billones en EEUU en 2006, en 51,000 empresas vs. 3,416 empresas, de acuerdo al Center for Venture Research de la University of New Hampshire. La cantidad de inversores activos en 2005 fue de 234.000 individuos de acuerdo al mismo informe.
Las inversiones ángeles enfrentan un riesgo extremadamente alto y por lo tanto requieren un muy alto retorno sobre la inversion. Debido a que un gran porcentaje de las inversiones ángeles son perdidas completamente cuando las empresas nacientes fracasan, los inversores ángeles profesionales buscan inversiones que tengan el potencial de retorno al menos 10 o más veces la inversión original en el período de 5 años, a través de una estrategia de salida definida, como puede ser una oferta pública o una adquisición.
