- Il comportamentismo (o behaviorismo) è un orientamento teorico la cui nascita è dovuta a John B. Watson (1878-1958) il quale ha inteso la psicologia come studio scientifico degli aspetti esteriori, pubblicamente osservabili, dell'attività mentale. Il comportamentismo si propose di far diventare la psicologia una disciplina di rango pari a quello delle scienze naturali tradizionali, in cui si possa pervenire a conoscenze oggettive che permettano di prevedere e controllare le azioni degli individui e di dar luogo ad applicazioni pratiche. A tal fine, questa scuola stabilì di escludere dal campo della psicologia la coscienza e i processi mentali, genere di fenomeni al cui riguardo.
Secondo i comportamentisti, non è possibile stabilire un accordo inter-soggettivo e a cui non sono applicabili procedure di indagine rigorose. L'oggetto della psicologia dovrebbe invece essere il comportamento, ossia il complesso delle manifestazioni esteriori, direttamente osservabili, di un individuo. Il comportamentismo è interessato a stabilire rapporti tra gli stimoli recepiti dal soggetto e le sue risposte mettendo tra parentesi ciò che intercorre tra questi due elementi, sia che si tratti di processi mentali, sia che si tratti di processi fisiologici.
Per il comportamentismo le associazioni stimolo-risposta stanno alla base della persoanlità dell'individuo. Esse si stabiliscono esclusivamente sulla scorta dell'esperienza. Nulla è innato; tutto è determinato dall' ambiente. Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore - by Alessandra Renna
