- Americký psycholog Irvinga Janise přišel s teorií skupinového myšlení (groupthink). Syndrom skupinového myšlení je způsob myšlení jednotlivců, úmyslně odpovídající zachování shody ve skupině. Skupinové myšlení v zájmu shody skupiny potlačuje nezávislost rozhodování jedince a jeho samostatnost, dochází k tlaku na uniformitu a sebecenzuře. Soudržnost a solidarita ve skupině se stává důležitějším než reálné zvažování faktů. Groupthink může způsobit, že skupina (typicky výbor nebo velká organizace) učiní špatná nebo nerozumná rozhodnutí, o kterých by každý člen mohl individuálně usoudit a zvážit, že nejsou moudrá.

- Skupinové myšlení vystupuje ve vysoce vnitřně soudružných skupinách jako tendence být zajedno s postoji a rozhodnutími této skupiny, být tedy solidární s tím, co skupina o něčem soudí. Jde totiž o myšlení, které probíhá ve zvláštní psychologické atmosféře vzájemného respektu, v níž se u každého člena skupiny uplatňuje autocenzura názorové deviace. Skupinové myšlení se objevuje všude tam, kde chtějí být lidé loajální ke skupině, k níž náleží, a kde panuje zdánlivá jednota myšlení.
