- Definition(s)
- A sub-microscopic aggregate of molecules. In the context of cleaners, these molecules are surfactants usually arranged in sphere or rod shapes with their hydrophilic ends facing outward into the water solution and hydrophobic ends facing the inside of the aggregate. Micelles can hold hydrophobic oil molecules at their centers to create stable emulsions. Alconox, Inc.
- Example sentence(s)
- Grease and oil are nonpolar and insoluble in water. When soap and soiling oils are mixed, the nonpolar hydrocarbon portion of the micelles break up the nonpolar oil molecules. A different type of micelle then forms, with nonpolar soiling molecules in the center. Thus, grease and oil and the 'dirt' attached to them are caught inside the micelle and can be rinsed away. - About.com by
- Using micelles for cleaning is not a new idea. Common household detergents contain micelles, which dramatically increase the capacity of the washwater to pick up organic contaminants. Micelles could likewise be used to remove organic contaminants from industrial waste streams. - Massachusetts Institute of Technology by
- In a micelle, the tails of the soap molecules are oriented toward and into the grease, while the heads face outward into the water, resulting in an emulsion of soapy grease particles suspended in the water.

- Example sentence(s)
- Une micelle (du latin mica : « parcelle ») est un agrégat sphéroïdal de molécules possédant une tête polaire hydrophile dirigée vers le solvant et une chaîne hydrophobe dirigée vers l'intérieur. - Wikipedia by Christian Fournier
- Les propriétés individuelles des monomeres et leurs interactions définissent la structure et la forme de l'objet composé: micelle, vesicle ou bi-couche. Parmi les structures différentes, la plus simple est une micelle sphérique. - pmc.polytechnique.fr by Christian Fournier

- Micely jsou shluky molekul tenzidů dispergované v kapalném médiu. Typická micela ve vodném roztoku vytváří agregáty s hydrofilní částí molekuly orientovanou do vodného prostředí a hydrofóbní částí skrytou uvnitř. wikipedia - by David König
- Example sentence(s)
- Hydrofobní konce molekul se snaží minimalizovat kontakt s vodným prostředím, což vede ke tvorbě micel – tvorbou micel se snižuje energie systému. - wikipedia by David König
