Căn cứ vào mối liên hệ giữa quyền và nghĩa vụ của các chủ thể, trách nhiệm BTTH được phân loại thành trách nhiệm liên đới và trách nhiệm riêng rẽ.
BTTH liên đới được hiểu là trách nhiệm nhiều người mà theo đó thì mỗi người trong số những người có trách nhiệm phải chịu trách nhiệm đối với toàn bộ thiệt hại và mỗi người trong số những người có quyền đều có quyền yêu cầu người gây thiệt hại phải bồi thường toàn bộ cho mình.
BTTH riêng rẽ là trách nhiệm nhiều người mà theo đó thì mỗi người có trách nhiệm chỉ phải chịu trách nhiệm đối với phần thiệt hại do mình gây ra và mỗi người trong số những người có quyền cũng chỉ có quyền yêu cầu người gây thiệt hại bồi thường những tổn thất mà mình phải gánh chịu.
