- بُقصد بهذا المصطلح أن تعهد مؤسسة ما (شركة أو جمعية، إلى آخره) إلى مجموعة من الأشخاص في مجتمع كبير (مثل مجتمعات الإنترنت) بمهمة كان من المفترض أن يقوم بها العاملون بالمؤسسة، وذلك بدون مقابل أو مقابل مكافأة لأن العمل يحتاج إلى مجموعة ضخمة من البشر والتكاليف لإنجازه. المصطلح مشتق من مصطلحين هما "crowd" أي "جمهور" و"sourcing" أي "تعهيد" وقد انتشر هذا المفهوم مؤخرًا نظرًا للتطور الكبير في تقنية المعلومات والسهولة في الاتصال بين الأفراد، ومن أبرز الأمثلة عليه الموسوعة الحرة ويكيبيديا، حيث تعتمد بالكامل على إسهامات الأفراد على الإنترنت.
