- Il ritaglio dell'immagine o crop, come i termini stessi suggeriscono, permette di "ritagliare" la parte che desideriamo dall'immagine originale. Il ritaglio dell'immagine o crop, è effettuato tipicamente per:
- ricomporre un'immagine;
- ricavarne una di formato diverso (ad es. da 4/3 a 2/3)
- dare rilevanza ad un soggetto o ai soggetti che nell'originale non ne hanno abbastanza (ad esempio poiché troppo distanti, come capita proprio nella fotografia naturalistica)

Scattare una fotografia può rivelarsi un gesto assai semplice e veloce, fatto al minimo da due operazioni: inquadrare e scattare! Tuttavia, più si tende a professionalizzare il proprio scatto, più si aggiungono fattori fondamentali da considerare, tra i quali in questo caso, l'inquadratura. Già perchè una buona inquadratura vale il 50% della bellezza della fotografia: selezionare quel che la fotografia mostra, il contenuto, è uno dei momenti fondamentali per determinare che cosa far arrivare all'osservatore.
