Hello,
some of you have ever had the experience of having to pay a fee to start a collaboration with a translation agency? The fee is a one time payment to start working with them which will be refunded to me on successful completion of the task assigned. Could you help me?
Thank you!!

No. Jan 28, 2022

If you mean small penny fees to respond to proposals on job aggregator sites, yeah that exists (okay-ish albeit only for underpaid work on upwork, pretty useless elsewhere). The likes of craigslist first popularized it for categories that would otherwise get spammed by opportunistic randos.

But for agencies? NO THAT'S A SCAM.

Then why are they asking you to pay upfront when they intend to refund the amount upon successful completion of a task? The answer is simply, you will never receive a project to complete. And they grin because one more translator had walked right into their trap and swallowed the bait.

I've heard of this before, some years ago.

I did not say that is a new thing Jan 28, 2022

As a matter of fact, this issue, which may be as old as ProZ, comes back with some regularity.

You are lucky Jan 29, 2022

Some setups don't even make it as clear as that. It's an obvious no-no.

They send me different work proposals. According to the project I choose, the length of the work, the deadline, the total payment and the fee I have to pay change. For example,
20 images
60 USD (the fee I have to pay)
760 USD (the total payment)

That's why I was uncertain.

No. You mustn't pay the client anything. The client must pay you.

Some do it voluntarily Jan 31, 2022

It seems that some colleagues voluntarily offer money to be considered as a (preferred) translator or to be considered at all to work for an agency: In 2010 I was approached by the owner of a Dutch agency (hello Stxxxen, I know you read these posts) for a job with the introducing words, that he was offered money by translators to employ them and how I dare to say I want 0.xx per source word.

I think that the work as a translator is really a difficult work, not for the work itself (there are many other works even more difficult) but for the difficulty in establishing genuine lasting work relationships... or at least this is what I perceived in these many years...
