After a few years your children arrive at maturity, and with that divine blessing which we may expect to accompany our prayerful efforts—they will be found with generous affections and established principles of piety. With what emotions do parents then look around upon their happy and prosperous family! They are receiving ***the earthly recompense of reward***. What an affecting sight it is, to see an aged and widowed mother leaning upon the firm arm of her son, as he accompanies her to the house of God! And how many parents have had their declining years cheered by the affectionate attentions of a daughter! Who will so tenderly watch over you in sickness as a daughter—whose bosom is animated by the principles of piety which you have inculcated?

Not quite sure about this. It might mean the earthly portion of thier reward for the effort of raising thier children (the heavenly portion will come later). It could also mean that their satifaction in the results of their efforts is the earthly reward they recieve (as opposed to the heavenly reward).

Thanks to VPHUING for the reference to the Biblical text (comment on Robert's answer). That terminology would have been much more familiar to people 100 or so years ago than now.

: It's a fancy, old-fashioned way of saying that they are getting their immediate reward, both materially & spiritually (on Earth) for their good actions as opposed to their eventual reward in Heaven.

"recompense of reward" is a hideous redundancy in English, and there seems little point in preserving the redundancy in Spanish.

I really think Ana made a mistake and meant to indicate that she wanted a translation into Spanish, since that is what she has always requested in the past with these religious texts and there was no indication to the contrary here.
