I'm not sure what he means by the last sentence. Thanks, Karen

For a freer translation, here are some ideas...
but I think Francis's idea of "not being caught off-guard" is the meaning. You can also say "catch unawares" (Lincoln) but that might hit people funny.
For a positive spin:
- our strategy won out against the events of...
- our strategy found us well equipped to face the events...
- this strategy kept us from falling short
- our strategy kept us on the ball
Keeping the negative structure:
- our strategy didn't fail us
- our strategy didn't let us down
-the events...couldn't best our strategy / were no match for our strategy

Comment: "There were so many great ideas to choose from that it was hard to pick, but I ended up using "our strategy found us well equipped to face the events of 2005 and 2006," which fit well with the author's style. But many of the other phrases would've been fine, too. Thanks to all three of you! Karen"

our strategy has been well able to cope with the events
our strategy has not been caught out/caught napping by the events of 2005/6
the latest events have not shown up any weaknesses in our strategy/have not caught it on the hop
Brainstorming to give you the meaning - too late at night to be inspired

: I'd say catch us off guard -- although it really refers to the strategy, as you say.
