Should probably be plasticised.
The hydrocarbon in question is probably a type of petroleum jelly ("Vaseline") which has then been made more liquid by addition of a plasticiser of some sort. In this case it could be plain old glycerine which is frequently used in ear drops. This way you combine the liquidity of the "plasticiser" with the ointment property of the "Vaseline".
