French term

témoin

French to English Science Textiles / Clothing / Fashion testing an insect repellent on various textiles
"ART.3 – Les bulletins de résultats et observations ne sont valables que pour les échantillons soumis à [test lab]: un ***témoin*** pourra être remis au demandeur, muni du sceau de [test lab] et joint au bulletin."

A textiles testing lab has been asked to test whether an insect repellent for use on fabrics damages or stains 7 types of textile. This is part of the standard small print on the covering letter from the test lab to the manufacturer of the repellent, which accompanies its results.

The rest of the small print cover things like "we are not responsible for what you choose do to with our results; you must pay more if you want to jump the queue; we keep any unused part of the sample for 3 months etc.).

I have no idea what "témoin" refers to. A sample of the sample submitted for testing? Proof of submission of the sample?

test certificate

It looks like a certificate as the "témion" is stamped (sealed) and accompagnies the test report.

depending on how

you've translated "échantillon", you could call this a "test specimen", "representative sample".

I understand your prob. in that this "témoin" is, as you say, a sample/specimen of a test specimen. I think introducing "representative" may be a solution.

I imagine the lab keeps the test specimens it has tested for a certain time so that in the event of dispute they can produce them. I suppose they are saying that despite this rule, they will provide either one whole specimen or a part of a specimen so the client can .... do whatever he wants with it.

control or core

I see "témoin" as meaning a piece of material to be used in further tests to check it as to several characteristics.
In some areas, it is used "control".
In other areas, "core".
