Glossary entry (derived from question below)
Spanish term or phrase:
En ese lugar se levantaba hasta la invasión napoleónica la iglesia de San Juan,
English translation:
This was where the Church of San Juan stood until the Napoleonic invasion
Spanish term
En ese lugar se levantaba hasta la invasión napoleónica la iglesia de San Juan,
-No sé cuál sería la mejor traducción de la frase de arriba. Dudo entre estos dos (más que nada es el uso del verbo “levantarse” que me da problemas:
In this place, the church of San Juan was erected (built) until the Napoleonic invasion, where Velázquez was buried with his wife, in 1660. (pero me suena demasiado literal)
or
Here/there stood the church of San Juan (or the San Juan Church) until the Napoleonic invasion, where Valezquez was buried... ?

: What about "this is" instead of "this was"? After all, "stood" is already in the past... Saludos/Regards!

Thanks Daniel - that´s a very valid point you made. I think you can only use 'this is' if you are physically at the site itself. Maybe one for the Discussion board!

I think they are using "levantar" to be poetic, so you could use something like:
The church of San Juan towered over this site until...

: I prefer the asker's version (i.e. it stood there until...) as here it sounds as if the site itself magically disappeared with Napoleon (!) agree with your take on it totally though!

Aie! Someone even more pedantic than myself (that's not an insult, btw ;). Perhaps my 2nd suggestion would get around that problem: "The church of San Juan towered over/dominated this site until..."
