handbook for musicians on tour
The vast majority of time you can bring your guitar on the plane if it' sin a gig bag. Usually you can even bring it on if it's in a hard case or a flight case,t oo. There are exceptions, so let me explain how it generally works.
If you're flying on a small plance, you'll need to > the guitar. I have had a guitar damaged from gate-checking it. Someone apparently dropped it on the way from the plane to the baggage cart. But this could happen with a flight case that you check with your luggage, too.

(erst) beim Gate-Check abgeben
"If you have a valuable and/or somewhat delicate item, or something that is too large to fit on the plane you can check it with a gate agent or flight crew member on the ramp of the plane and (at your option) pick it up on the next connection, or your final destination. Gate checked items go from the gate or ramp to the belly of the plane where the other luggage is stored. When the plane lands, gate-checked items are handed to the inside of the ramp just before the passengers begin to disembark. You may opt to gate check an item for each connection or check it through to your final destination. "

: ... someone dropped it on the way from the plane to the baggage cart spricht für mich gegen das Handgepäck, sondern hört sich nach einem normalen Check-in an.
