French term

un sens de la narration incontestable

French to English Art/Literary Art, Arts & Crafts, Painting description of artist\\\'s work
Ces œuvres sélectionnées par XXXX et par l’artiste, nous plongent dans un univers où mélancolie et burlesque se confondent, portées par ***** un sens de la narration incontestable *****.

This is about an annual exhibition of paintings to be held in a wine-maker's chateau, where XXXX is the name of the wine-maker. I haven't come up with any ideas for "narration incontestable" - and suspect I'm probably trying to be too literal here...

Many thanks for any help with this!

Discussion

Carol Gullidge (asker) May 21, 2009:
SJLD Thanks for putting me right on this one. As you guessed, I was trying to reconcile narration and incontestable
Carol Gullidge (asker) May 18, 2009:
my own ignorance of course shows in the very fact that I felt that the literal translation was too unclear/meaningless (to me!) :O)
Carol Gullidge (asker) May 18, 2009:
Hi Helen (et al) This is for the general public, in their publicity blurb about their annual art exhibition, which they have been running for a number of years. They choose a different artist each year. So, I'd say you're right not to presume that the register should be too academic, but perhaps it needs to aim at least at tourism level, if not slightly higher. The public is being invited to an art exhibition accompanied by a wine tasting in a chateau in Pauillac. If in doubt, I try to aim for a slightly higher register, as this tends not to make the Great British public look too ignorant! I think it's more flattering to give them the benefit of the doubt rather than assume ignorance on their part - especially as this is marketing/publicity - hoping to draw in the crowds
Helen Shiner May 18, 2009:
What sort of audience is this aimed at, please? Is this an academic account or more of a tourist-type one? If academic I would suggest something like, 'an incontestable sense of narrative', but I am presuming that would be the wrong tone. I wonder if you would mind clarifying, please?
SJLD May 18, 2009:
sens incontestable rather than narration IMO

thanks for the splendidly fast response polyglot - I like it!
I think narrative skills pretty well sums it up, but will forget about "literary skills" and "way with words" as this is an art exhibition :)

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "many thanks polyglot! I know it isn't a race, but this immediately led me to "narrative skills", which was the eventual choice. Other answers were great too!"

I feel that in front of pictures, if the painter has that kind of gift.
