: Have you any reason to think that "son" is appropriate in this context ? Normally, in such context, "child" is used (and the French word "fils" is the translation of "child" in IT context).

You have marked this as telecommunications. In this context I would think 'fil' would have the sense of 'wire' , where presumably ACKN/U are variations of ACK (Acknowledgement Packet).

Perhaps 'messages' would be better translated as 'signals'. It's hard to judge without more context.

ACKN and ACKU acknowledgment messages
The meaning of "fils" in this sentence is definitely "child", not "thread". Note also that in IT context, "fils" is the translation of "child", not "son", but it is used mainly for process relationship. This term looks weird here, even in French. What they might want to say, is that an acknowledgment message is generated in response to a request, but is quite inappropriate to call that a "fils" or "child" message. "Acknowledgment message" will be clear enough, as it is always generated in response to something.

Nonetheless, I didn't find a lot of terms on Google which said 'child' messages. So, I wanted to check on this forum! Moreover, later in the document, I came across a screenshot which used the term 'children's messages'... So, guess, we're bang on! Thanks again!
