Discussion

Muriel Vasconcellos Oct 6, 2009:
Further comments on "sanitario" As a 35-year veteran of the Pan American Health Organization/World Health Organization, I can attest that "sanitario" often means 'public health'. The word 'health' alone is sometimes used as a translation; however, the implication is 'human health', and animal health is a PUBLIC health issue only in that it affects the human food supply. They speak of 'veterinary public health' - not *'veterinary health'.

Thanks! As Liz indicated, likewise, I didn't want to post a suggestion. Hence my reason for providing my explanation. Also, more often than not, I stand in the lonely wilderness valiantly defending my position before the majority. Thank you very much for supporting my position in this case.
Henry Hinds Oct 6, 2009:
Excellent Excellent explanation, GSloane.
gsloane Oct 6, 2009:
"Sanitary" and "Health" I was doing a translation for a Latin American NGO and realized that they had wrongly translated the title of the conference. This isn't the first time this has happened. I have found over the years that Latin America has a mixed bureaucratic system for historical (Spain) and geographic (US) reasons. Thus, they tend to offer an odd mix of translations for government/NGO titles whose origins are English. In this case, "sanitaria" normally means "health" in English and I'm more inclined to prefer "health" or even sometimes, in applicable cases, "public health", as a more appropriate term (all of this, of course, depends on context). I have always shied away from using the term "sanitary" in English when referring to public/government/NGO organizations although there is extensive usage of same in recent times in translated works for official organizations. Sanitary in English normally refers to hygiene, cleanliness, sterile environment, etc., not really "health" as used to describe organizations, campaigns, government departments, etc.

Directorate/Bureau of Animal Health Control (in this case)

If it's SENASA in Peru, they use 'Directorate' in English. There are SENASAs all over Latin America.

The following official document is a PDF file that I can't copy, but it refers to the type of structure mentioned in your text. The document appears to be a top-quality translation issued by the government.

Department of Sanitary Campaign

There is a title called "Argentina and the United States", where Luchas Sanitarias is called Sanitary Campaign on page 82, Servicio de Luchas Sanitarias, meaning Sanitary Campaign Service, or SELSA. In the above case Direccion, I believe is a department, hence the above translation.

neutral Muriel Vasconcellos : So far so good, but there needs to be some qualification to make it clear that it's animal health, which is only of public health concern insofar as it affects the food supply.

I think the rest of the context would clarify that, all I provide here is the specific term requested and no more.
