Votes to reclassify question as PRO/non-PRO:

Non-PRO (1): SJLD

When entering new questions, KudoZ askers are given an opportunity* to classify the difficulty of their questions as 'easy' or 'pro'. If you feel a question marked 'easy' should actually be marked 'pro', and if you have earned more than 20 KudoZ points, you can click the "Vote PRO" button to recommend that change.

How to tell the difference between "easy" and "pro" questions:

An easy question is one that any bilingual person would be able to answer correctly. (Or in the case of monolingual questions, an easy question is one that any native speaker of the language would be able to answer correctly.)

A pro question is anything else... in other words, any question that requires knowledge or skills that are specialized (even slightly).

Another way to think of the difficulty levels is this: an easy question is one that deals with everyday conversation. A pro question is anything else.

When deciding between easy and pro, err on the side of pro. Most questions will be pro.

* Note: non-member askers are not given the option of entering 'pro' questions; the only way for their questions to be classified as 'pro' is for a ProZ.com member or members to re-classify it.

Discussion

Johannes Gleim Oct 8, 2009:
I am not lobbying for KudoZ points, but I would help the asker to use correct terminology and not to be blamed by the client, as the case may be, resulting in claims for damages and/or loss of clients, possibly.
Glen McCulley Oct 8, 2009:
chill out chill out Johannes. The asker has used the information given as they see fit - as will other fellow proZpeople in the future. I appreciate that you injected a lot of effort into your response - again, it will help proZpeople in the future. And that's the aim - to help the community, not to blather on lobbying for kudoz points!
Either way, given that the context of the question was medical injector needles, it is perfectly reasonable to use "étanche" 'as is' in the text, which states not just 'étanches' but "BIEN étanches" which as an idiom gets a whole other message across.
Descriptive, not prescriptive. See?
Johannes Gleim Oct 8, 2009:
Please do not count the agrees, but consider the foundations of answers. In your case, "étanche" is insufficient and requires indication of specified medium.
Remember: The question was "fluid-tight" and not "tight". The answer (translation) should correspond to the question (source term). The only correct translation is "étanche aux fluides" ou "étanche aux liquides" as demonstrated in my answer and supported by reliable links, found by profound research (about 2 hours looking into techical and governemental or semi-gouvernemental glossaries.
Note 1: The honored answer was provided with no other foundation than that it were in certain glossary. This is no real proof.
Note 2: I could only check my e-mails in the evening after return from my business trip. 10 hours were gone, when I found the 1st totally wrong answer, already approved by some peers (which may not have technical or scientifical background like me). I added a correct answer, but no peer looked to "old questions". That's the only reason, why I did not receive "agrees".
Johannes Gleim Oct 8, 2009:
étanche ne dit rien que "tight". Il faut spécifier le media, par ex. étanche à l'eau (n'est pas étanche aux gaz), car les molécules des médias diverses ont différent tailles.

disagree Johannes Gleim : invalid without specified media. // This is not obvious. Each material has its own porosity and each fluid has different molecule size. Therefore the same enclosure may be tight for one, but permeable to other media.

i would have thought that was obvious - didn't think i had to translate 'fluid'!

étanche aux liquide ou fluide

"étanche" ne suffit pas. L'étanchiété est toujours fonction de la fluide (liquide ou gaz).
