English term

in such same

English Art/Literary General / Conversation / Greetings / Letters
"Do it in such same manner." - is this sentence correct? Meaning "in exactly the same manner". Googling "in such same" doesn't return too many results, but my impression is that I meet this combination frequently.

I think Google works "in such same manner":) in every country. How many pages with results (the number of such pages is shown at the bottom of the result page) can you see in your link?
Stephanie Ezrol Dec 24, 2009:

I think google works differently in differnt countries even if you seem to be asking for the same parameters.

"in such same," which is the above link, gives 690,000 hits. Because I immediately saw such things as "In such, same-sex marriage," I googled again without sex, and got the lower amount.
Polangmar Dec 24, 2009:
in such same - 139 hits ("including sex"): http://tinyurl.com/ycvlxsd (no trace of 548,000)
in such same manner - 3 hits: http://tinyurl.com/yc6z34u
Stephanie Ezrol Dec 23, 2009:
You also find it in theology. Its an old but enduring useage.
literary (asker) Dec 23, 2009:
Maybe it's business English - found in contracts.

Thanks, and happy festivities to you, too
agree Kim Metzger : Might be classified as archaic diction, which is still used in legal texts.

Thanks, Kim - yes, I think that's probably true. I've certainly never needed to say it!

Thanks - you too
agree Jenni Lukac (X) : Archaic as Kim notes, but correct.

Thanks - yes, it depends entirely on the text
neutral cmwilliams (X) : the use of 'such same' may occasionally be used in a legal context but "do it in such same manner" would not be used in english imo.//I don't think the asker's context is legal and I wouldn't encourage its use in a general context.

I can see what you mean, but I can imagine "X may do it in such same manner"
agree Rolf Keiser : legal jargon

Thanks
agree Stephanie Ezrol : I get 548,000 google hits (excluding sex). If you include sex you get more. Funny but true. And not that archaic.

Thanks, Stéphanie - I get 549,000 ex sex. Apart from this and a Freud link, all on page 1 are of interest and from legal or literary texts
neutral Alexandra Taggart : Merry Christmas!

What on earth is that supposed to mean? In response to a changed disagree (referring to my judgement) of course. Merry Christmas to you, too

[not proper English]

"Do it just like this."
"Do it just so."
"Do it exactly the same way."

These, as well as your own suggestion, represent correct ways of expressing the underlying thought, in English.

Thank you, Yasutomo.
agree Shera Lyn Parpia : such and same shouldn't go in the same sentence - "such a manner" or "in the same manner" but not together.

That's how I see it. Even if evidence can be adduced that such a combination of words is somehow technically "correct," it simply looks wrong, and my guess is that something like 98% of educated speakers--on both sides of the pond--would declare it wrong.

Ta, Jack.
neutral Kim Metzger : It's proper English. It's just not used much anymore. http://www.townofelsmere.com/boa.htm /Question: is this sentence correct? Answer: yes, it's correct in some contexts.

When something is only "proper" in highly restricted contexts, and is thought by most educated speakers to be "improper," then I think it is best to consider it "improper" for all intents and purposes. Thems me thoughts.
agree cmwilliams (X) : "such same" may be ok in a legal context but I don't think anyone would say "do it in such same manner", which is the asker's question.

Right. This is what I tried to explain in my response to Kim. Thanks, CM.

Thank you, Polangmar. Your search results are very telling indeed.
agree Alexandra Taggart : the satanic pop of redundant "such" causes a little gasp of horror

I share your horror, and my heart recoils at the mere thought of the utterance of such a rank barbarism. Thank you, Alexandra.
