correcting myself and simplifying: They were disenchanted with the traditional left and ***the ban on political activities*** decreed by the military dictatorship / government / junta.

a ban on political activities tends to include not only political parties but also labor unions and NGO's.

They had grown disenchanted--not only with the traditional left but with the impossibility of political action resulting from the political ban imposed by the military government.

This version seems to capture the original in English that sounds entirely natural.

Suerte.

To avoid the repetition of "political," the word could simply be omitted before "ban," as the context would surely make it clear that the ban could only have been "political" in nature....

act democratically because of the ban on political parties

Both suggestions are fine but, even though the source text uses 'políticamente' and 'política' in the same sentence, it sounds strange to my ears.

'He closed the Congress, banned all political parties and dismantled all student unions and many worker unions'.

'In the 1983 electoral campaign Alfonsín called to national unity, restoration of democratic rule and prosecution of those responsible for the dirty war'.

My last reference is the definition of the word 'democracy'. I must have forgotten to include the word when I was cutting and pasting.
