French term

chaînage

French to English Tech/Engineering Construction / Civil Engineering
Document on construction, reinforced concrete.
The sentence is: "Les lignes de jonction
doivent seulement être des "chaînes" ou "chaînages", c'est-à-dire des éléments capables de reprendre des tractions suivant leur axe et capables d'assurer le transfert de traction/compressions perpendiculaires à leur axe."

The proposed translations for 'chaîne' and 'chaînage' are not satisfying in this context in my opinion. Just saying 'a reinforcement capable of...' is not good enough I believe.

Discussion

kashew Jun 1, 2013:
@ Andrew & Michel, Hi. After a good night's sleep I looked again. What exactly do they mean by "lignes de jonction" - splicing of elements (welding up)? I'd like to see some diagrams to confirm better what, I think, is going on.
(I've twigged one thing: "ligne" and "chainage" can both be different things in this field.)

Andrew, since I finally selected 'tie reinforcement', can you please suggest this answer, so I can select it and grant you the points. Thanks!
Peer comment(s):

neutral kashew : I think the asker wants reinforcement that is load-bearing, not ties which are for positioning.
