English term

Commissioning Manager - Acute Care

Non-PRO English to German Medical Human Resources Job Title
Title at the end of a letter for a Primary Care Trust (UK). I would use it in English, but is there a German equivalent that could be added in brackets after? With thanks.
Change log

May 19, 2010 10:39: Steffen Walter changed "Field (specific)" from "(none)" to "Human Resources"

Votes to reclassify question as PRO/non-PRO:

PRO (1): Steffen Walter

When entering new questions, KudoZ askers are given an opportunity* to classify the difficulty of their questions as 'easy' or 'pro'. If you feel a question marked 'easy' should actually be marked 'pro', and if you have earned more than 20 KudoZ points, you can click the "Vote PRO" button to recommend that change.

How to tell the difference between "easy" and "pro" questions:

An easy question is one that any bilingual person would be able to answer correctly. (Or in the case of monolingual questions, an easy question is one that any native speaker of the language would be able to answer correctly.)

A pro question is anything else... in other words, any question that requires knowledge or skills that are specialized (even slightly).

Another way to think of the difficulty levels is this: an easy question is one that deals with everyday conversation. A pro question is anything else.

When deciding between easy and pro, err on the side of pro. Most questions will be pro.

* Note: non-member askers are not given the option of entering 'pro' questions; the only way for their questions to be classified as 'pro' is for a ProZ.com member or members to re-classify it.

Discussion

Non-ProZ.com Sep 19, 2003:
Additional Clarification Thanks for your responses so far, glad to see that there are quite a lot of different definitions... In line with the body of the letter, I agree with DM's definition, as the trust is negotiating as to who should pay the bill and in what currency. Having done more work on Google on that basis, what about "Leiter Medizinische Leistungen und Vergtungen (...)" - or would that open another can of worms???

Einkaufsmanager, Akutbehandlung

Would be my suggestion.
In the UK there are Regional Health Authorities, each split into a number of "Primary Care Trusts", which are responsible for local medical, dental etc. health care under the National Health Service. The "commissioning Manager" of one of these trusts is responsible for buying-in of health services such as performance of operations by hospitals; supplies; provision of beds and treatment; and the thousands of other things which are associated with health care, Thus he is, as it were, a "Purchasing Manager" and in this case, his remit is a little narrower, as he "only" has to purchse facilities for treating "acute" patients. These are those suffering from acute illnesses - those which arise suddenly and are severe, but are generally of short duration.
I'll have to leave it to your discretion how you handle the German - I'm really not too confident about the suggestion above, but I am confident about my explanation. It came from the Northampton PCT Deputy to the Commissioning Manager there.

Disagree all you want, Ivo; this answer is RIGHT. The asker has said this is a PCT, and NOT a hospital. I\'ve spoken to the PCT quoted, and that is what I have posted. If you want their telephone number, I\'ll be happy to give it to you. I know it looks odd, but that\'s life....

The basic problem is that the format of the UK health system is radically different from the one we know here.
\"Commissioning\" is a high-falutin\' expression for \"purchasing\" - you could \"commission\" a painting, and this is a parallel. It\'s just someone \"commissioning\" health service supplies, be they beds, bedpans, sheets, nursing carers, surgeons, thermometers or whatever.

Personally, I\'d be happy for that explanation to be used. It looks as close as you\'ll get to a deutsche Entsprechung, at any rate.
Peer comment(s):

disagree Ivo Lang : Akutbehandlung ist ein medizinische Therapieform und kein organisatorischer Zweig im Gesundheitswesen. Warum immer "Manager" und Einkauf wäre doch "purchase", nicht?

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "Thank you very much to all that contributed with solutions to this query. I have to admit it is very difficult for me to grade this term - however, I found DM's explanation most useful. Thanks you once again. "

Ensuring optimum services for the residents of the Borough takes pragmatism, diplomacy and analytical ability. You will need a broad knowledge of social care and commissioning processes. Experience of delivering children’s services would be particularly welcome. Your sensitivity, energy, and ability to engage with operational managers will enable you to negotiate, inspire and achieve results. This will be true whether you are taking the lead in joint strategic planning with external agencies or developing channels of communication with operational service managers. IT literacy is a must and with it the ability to develop management information tools. You are likely to be educated to degree level and will, ideally, hold a management qualification.

Peer comment(s):

disagree David Moore (X) : Sorry, Johannes, but this is NOT "emergency medicine/medical care", as defined in hospital terms. See my definition above.

I hadn't read your explanation before answering. Your statements about PCT are convincing
