English term

trafficked

English to French Tech/Engineering Construction / Civil Engineering Travaux de terrassement
Topsoil shall not be unnecessarily *trafficked* either before stripping or when in a stockpile.

Discussion

kashew May 31, 2015:
Possible doubts! About all the answers so far: it begins to sound possible they are talking about soil "messed about with" (quality improved) to put it in layman's terms.

Does one run over soil that is in a stockpile? Before stripping it, perhaps.
kashew May 30, 2015:
Compaction is the thing here, I believe:

soils in Alberta, the trafficking of wetter soils destroys soil structure, which has .... recompacted by the trafficking of the soil by dozers when the topsoil is spread.

Can be undesired, or intentional as in:
Each experimental plot was trafficked with two tractors, one light (60 kN) and one heavy (80 kN). In topsoil (0-200 mm), up to five passes of the heavy (HT) and light tractors (LT), as in…
Either way compaction, compactage is the translation, I feel sure.

Thanks
Cf. http://www.proz.com/kudoz/english_to_french/mining_minerals_...

disagree Daryo : that's the translation for "compacted soil" which is a possible effect of "trafficking" the topsoil BUT NOT THE SAME AS "trafficking"

Harsh judgment! "compactage" is a noun, the text and term sought, seem to be a verbal, D? And, did you notice my explanation; "par passage des engins de chantier"? // Why not be consistent - Disagree with all the other answers too?

La couche arable ne doit pas être inutilement déplacée;

English term (edited): trafficking topsoil

circuler [sur le sol ...] / circulation sur le sol

Topsoil shall not be [unnecessarily] trafficked
=

Seedbed preparation

Cultivation operations [=> involves driving/walking over it] should be the minimum necessary to achieve an acceptable seedbed. Repeated trafficking of the land increases the risks of causing compaction. The finer the seedbed, the greater the risk of the surface sealing during rainfall, leading to run-off and subsequent erosion. Rougher seedbeds which are more resistant to erosion may be produced using traditional non-powered harrows. Where power harrows are used, rougher seedbeds can be achieved by increasing the forward speed of the tractor or reducing the PTO speed. Rolling the land after drilling should be avoided where practically possible, as this will also tend to increase surface run-off.

neutral kashew : Another way of putting it - but do you really expect me to give you an agree!?// What bugs me is Answerers who shoot down the opposition with Disagrees. Not cricket in my book - leave it to the peers.

that is entirely up to you - for me there is a difference between naming the cause and naming the effect // if the ST talks about "walking/driving over the soil" I won't replace that by "the soil being squashed" [my method]

Peer comment(s):
