Spanish term

diagnosticar

Spanish to English Other International Org/Dev/Coop Community development - vocational trade
El extracto a continuación corresponde a un estudio a nivel rural para determinar cuales son los oficios/ocupaciones más viables considerando el contexto local:

Actividad:
Diagnosticar disciplinas vocacionales potenciales.

Unidad de Medida:
Número de diagnosticos realizados. El indicador de esta actividad al AF 18: 1 diagnostico.

Requerimientos: Alimentacion materiales y transporte.

Inicialmente estaba pensando en traducir diagnosticar como 'identify' puesto que en este contexto no cabe una traducción literal, o al menos eso creo.

El detalle es que 'diagnosticar' se tendría que corresponder con 'diagnosticos'..

Sugerencias... y desde ya gracias por su colaboración.

Peer comment(s):

agree James A. Walsh : I think either "evaluate/assess" would work well for "diagnosticar", and "evaluations/assessments" for "diagnósticos"

Gracias El equivalente en español es "Evaluación Diagnóstica" dentro de instrumentos de evaluación

analyze

This is how I usually translate it. Diagnóstico then becomes 'analysis'.

identify

What "diagnosticar" clearly means here is "identify."
Peer comment(s):

neutral Jennifer Levey : You can identify things (= stick labels on them) without ever moving on to the next stage in the process: holmsie's 'analysis'.

I think that "diagnosticar" and "diagnostico" are not being used with their normal meaning here (in other words, the writer has not been very careful in his/her language) and that the intended and actual meaning of the word in context is "identify."
agree Carol Gullidge : I agree with 'identify' even if this means seeking something different for 'diagnosticos'; this wouldn't be a major problem imo!

make a diagnosis

followed, naturally enough, by 'diagnosis'

'analyse' is part of the process of diagnosing, but it is perfectly possible to analyse something and never reach a proper conclusion, or diagnosis.

Bear in mind also that a 'diagnosis' (and not only in the medical field - in many other contexts too) a diagnosis is a prelude to a prognosis. In the international development world, many organizations (NGOs, governments, agencies, ...) are more interesting "selling" a good prognosis than they are in making or reading a proper diagnosis of the current situation.
