Я не медик, но как филолог, лишь могу сказать что acute это факт-что уже определен, а резкое ухудшение как мне кажется означает просто sudden or sharp worsening-пока не факт.
Разница в том что acute информирует об определенном форме, остроте болезни, а второй sharp-информирует о процессе, течении болезни.

В данном случае acute deterioration и sharp deterioration - одно и то же.
Даже если переводить acute, как острое, все равно острое ухудшение - это то же самое, что резкое ухудшение. В данном случае смысла это не исказит. Sudden - внезапное, я бы не использовал.

I believe that "резкое ухудшение" means here "sudden or sharp" worsening of smb's health. Acute means just serious and is one that becomes severe very quickly but does not last very long. We don't know exactly here it lasts long or not.
