This is the best I could come up with. I think it's idiomatic and inexact, and of course other options are more than welcome.
Definition of dissolve (one relevant sense): "to cause to fade in or out in a dissolve"
I think this could also be apt for the simile, which has to do with mirages/deserts/illusory imagery
