English term
gaslighting and cancel culture
Jan 3, 2023 22:05: Victoria Britten changed "Level" from "Non-PRO" to "PRO"
PRO (3): Tony M, Beatriz Ramírez de Haro, Victoria Britten
When entering new questions, KudoZ askers are given an opportunity* to classify the difficulty of their questions as 'easy' or 'pro'. If you feel a question marked 'easy' should actually be marked 'pro', and if you have earned more than 20 KudoZ points, you can click the "Vote PRO" button to recommend that change.
How to tell the difference between "easy" and "pro" questions:
An easy question is one that any bilingual person would be able to answer correctly. (Or in the case of monolingual questions, an easy question is one that any native speaker of the language would be able to answer correctly.)
A pro question is anything else... in other words, any question that requires knowledge or skills that are specialized (even slightly).
Another way to think of the difficulty levels is this: an easy question is one that deals with everyday conversation. A pro question is anything else.
When deciding between easy and pro, err on the side of pro. Most questions will be pro.
* Note: non-member askers are not given the option of entering 'pro' questions; the only way for their questions to be classified as 'pro' is for a ProZ.com member or members to re-classify it.

Merci FPC, bonnes suggestions |
détournement cognitif et culture de l'effacement
My near-namesake of Adrien E. in the discussion entries: Quote > Sur gaslighting, je pense que le terme utilisé au Québec est "détournement cognitif" < Unquote The Ingrid Bergman film term looks odd, but supposedly covers insidious types of behavio(u)r other than straight bullying or, nowadays, online 'trolling' - Heaven forbid on ProZ Q&As!
'Cancel culture ' ne se traduit pas : well the EU's IATE terminology database has, though maybe not the only right answer. BTW, the phrase has always struck me as a détournement of 'compensation culture'.
I'm unsure why there are protests about not-for-points questions, but they would be difficult to split and apportion between both parts of the question anyway.

Did more searching on 'tirer vers le bas'. Although the websites I found info with are not dictionary definitions, they summarize what I had in mind. Fuyez !" https://lepetitcoach.com/7-signes-que-vous-etes-en-mauvaise-compagnie/ Bottom line. There are many synonyms to "gaslighting". Thanks for your replies and ideas. |

: Ah, bon!

Origin of the word "gaslighting" in English
"Gaslighting is a colloquialism, loosely defined as manipulating someone so as to make them question their own reality.[1][2] The term derives from the title of the 1944 American film Gaslight, which was based on the 1938 British theatre play Gas Light by Patrick Hamilton..."

Pay no attention to that Wikipedia page's statement that the term "did not gain popular currency in English until the mid-2010's." That entry must have been written by a millennial. The word underwent an explosion in use in the mid-2010s but it has meant the same thing for my entire life and most likely since the movie came out or not long afterwards.
"Gaslighting is the act of distorting the truth in a way that’s intended to make another person accept the deception due to doubting their own memory, reality, or sanity. It’s considered a form of psychological manipulation or emotional abuse."

The OED shows that the word has been used in this sense since at least as early as 1961 and possibly since the 1950s: https://www.oed.com/viewdictionaryentry/Entry/255554
