French term
modulation temporelle
French to English
Science
Physics
Spectrometry
Context:
L’ensemble spectromètre synchrone à phases multiples utilise la modulation temporelle du rayonnement optique à analyser pour mesurer sa distribution spectrale de puissance, c’est-à-dire son « spectre ».
Should this be "time" or "temporal"?
Both have been used
TIA Chris

time modulation
I found the term to be translated from "time modulation" to "modulation temporelle" in this patent:

: I think this is better because it's two syllables shorter, but temporal is OK too.

(Note: reminds me spontaneously of amplitude modulation or Amplitude-Shift Keying)
In amplitude modulation, the amplitude (signal strength) of the wave is varied in proportion to that of the message signal, such as an audio signal. This technique contrasts with angle modulation, in which either the frequency of the carrier wave is varied, as in frequency modulation, or its phase, as in phase modulation.
:
The modulating message signal may be analog in nature, or it may be a digital signal, in which case the technique is generally called amplitude-shift keying.

Amplitude-shift keying (ASK) is a form of amplitude modulation that represents digital data as variations in the amplitude of a carrier wave. In an ASK system, a symbol, representing one or more bits, is sent by transmitting a fixed-amplitude carrier wave at a fixed frequency for a specific time duration.

Spectral sensitivities were measured by a procedure of flicker threshold. The shape of the spectral sensitivity curve depends systematically on both the frequency and percentage of temporal modulation.
On mesure les sensibilités spectrales par une méthode de seuil de papillotement. La forme de la courbe de sensibilité spectrale dépend systématiquement à la fois de la fréquence et du pourcentage de modulation temporelle.

Spatio-temporal modulation is another promising way for breaking reciprocity, and has been reported for a range of systems, including waveguides and metasurfaces [13,14,30–32]. In such systems, spatio-temporal modulation leads to unidirectional coupling between different guided and/or scattered modes of the system.
:
The mode is transmitted without any perturbation, whereas in the other propagation direction, the mode couples to other modes in the system leading to an effective signal isolation. Notably, in this case light is transmitted in both propagation directions; isolation is achieved by signal conversion to a different frequency in one of the directions followed by a damping-filter.

: sorry, this "temporal modulation" seems to be used in relation to LED, lights, etc.

Light is electromagnetic radiation in wave form that can be broken down into a spectrum and modulated. I have provided enough references for this.

time modulation
Le traitement du signal micro-ondes basé sur une modulation temporelle fait référence aux technologies de traitement du signal où les propriétés du signal varient dans le temps, et ce grâce aux variations temporelles des paramètres physiques du système.
Time modulation based microwave signal processing refers to the signal processing technologies whose properties are time-varying introduced by the time variation of their physical parameters.

Discussion
"time delay is quite different:
Term: time-delay relay
Term: relais à fermeture retardée
https://iate.europa.eu/entry/result/1191732/en-en-fr
Term: ignition delay time
Term: délai d'amorçage

time delay
1. a delay that separates the occurrence of two events
Soviet scientists believed the bacteria survive in a quiescent form, but this would imply a shorter time delay between population peaks and outbreaks.
2. electronics
a delay between two operations of a device designed to make it safer or more efficient
3. a delay between transmitting and receiving broadcast material, esp as a means of preventing offensive material from being broadcast
