Medical report
I am translating (into Italian) an English medical report originally drafted in Croatian. I found the following acronym which I don't understand in this context:
***Physical therapy: DDS 3,4 in the cervical segment, ultrasonic massage of the p.v.m. cervical region on the left and of the left suprascapular region... ***
May be someone can help me. The answers I received until now do not seem correct in this context.
Thanks for your help

DDC (Dia-dynamic Currents)
Ref. 1:
Koju ćemo struju i kada upotrijebiti ovisi o kliničkoj slici bolesnika. U akutnoj fazi kriobolje koristimo tzv. hladne struje, kao to su: klasična galvanizacija, ultrapodraajne struje (URS), dijadinamske struje (DDS), interferentne struje (IFS) i transkutanu električnu nervnu stimulaciju (TENS).
Ref. 2:
Combination Therapy
In general terms, combination therapy involves the simultaneous application of ultrasound (US) with an electrical stimulation therapy. In Europe, Diadynamic Currents are frequently utilised, but in the UK, US is most often combined with bipolar Interferential Therapy (IF).
There is a significant lack of published material in this area. And much of the information herein is anecdotal or based on the experience of those who use the modality frequently. Broadly, the effects of the combined treatment are those of the individual modalities. There is no evidence at present for any additional effects which can only be achieved when the modalities are used in this particular way.
Ref. 3:
As an example of general mechanisms of electro-therapy, let us look at DDC (Dia-Dynamic Current or P. Bernard current).
DDC is made up of impulses half-sinusoidal in shape with a frequency of 50 100 Hz with delayed exponent background. DDC excites myelinated cutaneous nerves, which are sensitive to this current. Ascending afferent impulses go towards the substantia gelatinosa in the posterior horns of the spinal cord and then along paleo-spinal-thalamic, neo-spinal-thalamic and spinal-reticular-thalamic tracts and activate opioid and serotonin-ergic systems of the brain stem

: have a look here: http://www.onelook.com/?d=all_med&v=&sort=&langdf=all ; I can't be more specific, medicine isn't my field, but I thought you might find it in some of dictionaries; try with a direct e-mail to a proz member: www.proz.com/pro/2775 !

Dusk-Dawn Simulation (form of therapy)
This is known to us here in the Northern latitudes, because of an assosicated condition called (Seasonal Affective Disorder SAD) caused by lack of daylight in the long winter nights of Northern Scandinavia and North America.
Dusk-Dawn simulation is used to help such sufferers, and possibly sufferers of other disorders (spinal in this case I presume, with terms like uyltrasonic massage of pvm - paravertebral muscles - and supracapsular region)
--------------------------------------------------
Note added at 1 day 9 hrs 1 min (2006-01-12 19:07:23 GMT)
--------------------------------------------------
I accept VPUHING's (large) question mark about this (see peer comment below), but my thinking was that since the spinal cord is a large nerve element, that maybe there was stress relief with this DDS. But I admit that the other option above (DDC) may in fact be a better option.
