Dutch term

ideële factoren

Dutch to English Social Sciences Philosophy
"Naast dergelijke materiële factoren hebben echter ook ideële factoren een belangrijke rol gespeeld. Sterker nog, achter veel materiële liggen ideële factoren."
De VD vertaling "ideal" past hier niet. Het zijn factoren gebaseerd op ideeën, niet idealen. Ik kan alleen maar "notional" bedenken.

Discussion

Ineke Hardy (asker) Aug 30, 2006:
De schrijver heeft het over " bepaalde ideeën omtrent mens en maatschappij" i.v.m. "de opkomst van de verzorgingsstaat," vrijemarktideeën" en dat "de wereld geregeerd wordt door ideeën en door weinig anders." They are concepts, really, but also ideals, in a way. The boundaries blur. I really appreciate all the input!

Tina Vonhof (X) Aug 29, 2006:
With Antoinette - some examples would help. Could you get away with psycho-social factors? Or societal factors?
Ken Cox Aug 29, 2006:
With Antionette -- it would help considerably to know what the author means by ideeën (personal ideas, beliefs or convictions, social or collective ideas, zeitgeist, personal or popular convictions, trends or fashions in belief, weltanschauung, etc.)
Antoinette Verburg Aug 29, 2006:
Kun je een voorbeeld geven van die ideeën?
Ineke Hardy (asker) Aug 29, 2006:
The topic is the nuclear family and the reasons for its decline. The author goes on to identify a number of "ideeën" so I would have to use the same word each time. I've thought of "idea-based" but that kind of construction is such a cop-out.
Tina Vonhof (X) Aug 29, 2006:
I think more context would help to understand what they are really getting at.

Selected

ideological

I thought that given the context actually this might be what is meant.
Peer comment(s):

agree Ken Cox : My feeling too if the adjective form must be retained (but it should be made clear that it's spelled 'with a small i'.

conceptual factors

As synonym for idea, I think conceptual will work. It depends on the context.
Note from asker:
Thanks for the suggestion. I thought of it but its common usage relates more to the ability to picture things, so to speak. Much used in linguistics and technical contexts.

ideaed factors

Kan je niet zoiets gebruiken als "ideaed" ? In Van Dale staat ideëel voor "rijk aan ideeën". Heb op Google slechts één hit "ideaed methods" teruggevonden.

theoretical factors

Another possiblity: "theoretical factors", or "imagined" (or even non-manifest).

"Latent" factors might be another possibility.
Peer comment(s):

agree Ruchira Raychaudhuri : Yes, as opposed to the "materiële" factors mentioned. "Abstract" or "Intangible" factors also occurred to me.

Idealistic factors

With the "ideeën" described by the author becoming “ideals”.

ideas

After seeing the examples, I would translate this simply as 'ideas' and leave the 'factoren' out.

Voorbeeld op onderstaande website: "...te verklaren is aan de hand van de kracht van ideeën dan wel materiële factoren."

All the other answers helped me to arrive at this conclusion as well because, although they all come close, none of them seemed to be the perfect fit. That is an incentive to keep thinking about it.
Peer comment(s):

agree Ken Cox : Probably the best solution.
