English term

walking around (in a fog)

English to Arabic Medical Medical: Health Care Psychology
Context is a psychological interview. The psych asked the (depressed) patient "Have you been walking around in a fog?" I have the feeling that most of the literal translations for "walking around", like " تجول " or " تمشى " are not quite right. The sense of the English is broader than just "moving or walking about"; it refers to general conduct, i.e. going about one's ordinary activities. Is there an Arabic term that captures this? Maybe " هام على وجهه "?

Discussion

Non-ProZ.com Aug 26, 2004:
Thanks Thanks to everybody for the suggestions. The one I picked seems to nicely combine the notions of going or wandering about, and psychological disturbance.
Non-ProZ.com Aug 24, 2004:
Awadh: the psychologist is trying to ascertain if the patient's symptoms match the clinical profile of depression. The language is definitely metaphorical; it's not about the weather. Symptoms of depression include inability to concentrate, a feeling that the world is grey, inability to take pleasure in the things one normally enjoys, etc. - i.e. the feeling that one is in a kind of psychological fog.
Non-ProZ.com Aug 24, 2004:
Thanks all. I'm inclined to go with " ", but still it seems too literal. So here's a variant question: if an Arab psychologist wanted to ask this sort of question, what would s/he say?

Dear Arblnk, in this case, I mean if you think the psych question is not direct one, you have to elaborate about patient case. it is a matter of creation, but after knowing the situation and the patient's case.
It is known that the weather has great psycological impact on patients or normal people. Hence the question sounds direct.

Suggestions

Since you are sure that the meaning is metaphotical, why not try to adapt it to Arabic. Here are some suggetions هل تشعر بظلال رمادية تغلف عالمك or هل تشعر بالظلام يزحف على الأشياء المحيطة.
