Dat maakt de boel een stuk complexer.
Censuur kan enerzijds gebruikt worden om te voorkomen dat de macht van een bepaalde instantie wordt ondermijnd, maar anderzijds ook met het idee de burger te beschermen.
Dit laatste argument is in de geschiedenis vaak door overheden misbruikt als rookgordijn voor het eerste.
Een bekende uitspraak van Thomas Jefferson, de derde president van de VS, is:
"It is error alone which needs the support of government. Truth can stand by itself."
Maar de leugen is sneller.
Attempts to suppress information are often made through cease-and-desist letters, but instead of being suppressed, the information receives extensive publicity, as well as media extensions such as videos and spoof songs, which can be mirrored on the Internet or distributed on file-sharing networks.
The Streisand effect is an example of psychological reactance, wherein once people are aware that some information is being kept from them, they are significantly more motivated to access and spread that information.
In some cases, seeking or obtaining an injunction to prohibit something from being published leads to increased publicity."
