it just means "a number of"; i.e. "several", perhaps having something in common, but not necessarily connected (so not a group or family; perhaps a list or series in the loose sense).

(I think the operative metaphor in this expression is a clutch of eggs, i.e. between say 3 and 6 for a domestic hen; so quite similar to "a handfull" in terms of the implied range.)
