The use of barnstorming in the meaning of "crisscrossing the country" does not use a preposition.
example:

In my opinion, the mention of "building an airstrip" and "barnstorming OVER the cooutryside" rather implies that this is to be taken literally, as meaning "doing stunts".

why else build a private airstrip, then? he could perfectly well use an existing country airfield it it was just for flying all over France.// my point: hedge clipping IS acrobatics. And you would not be allowed to do it except above your private airstrip

"On the land" va avec "I will build a small airstrip".
"Barnstorm" veut dire ici "sillonner", "parcourir" ...un peu comme un politicien bat la campagne pour rallier les foules. Ici, l'idée principale est "l'amour de la campagne française" et le désir de la survoler sans cesse...

Or, "se montrer" - just "showing off" without flashy acrobatics?
2) barnstorm has three meanings: a) tour the rural areas in a performing group, b) tour the rural areas in a political campaign, & c) do aerial acrobatics. So one would assume that the writer is saying that he will be doing acrobatics over the French countryside, but I think that he's using the expression loosely, sort of combining the meanings and is really just going to fly over the countryside extensively. So I think that Mr. Delaunay's suggestion of sillonner is very appropriate.
