English term

composition suitable

English to French Law/Patents Law: Patents, Trademarks, Copyright demande de brevet
Comment comprenez-vous "composition" ici ?

One option for responding would be to amend the claim to recite "a method for preventing the recurrence...". Alternatively, the claim could be amended as suggested by the Examiner and as amended for the corresponding US patent application.

We note, however, that amending the claim to recite a method would be more appropriate for Australia as a composition suitable for a particular use is not considered to be limited to that use. Accordingly, please advise whether you would like us to amend claim 1 to recite "a method for preventing ..."

J'ai opté dans un premier temps pour "composition",

Qu'en pensez-vous ?

Discussion

Alison MacG Mar 19, 2013:
composition applicable à The patent application discussed in the letter you are translating is the Australian equivalent of an International Application written in French. The term used in the French version is "composition" and the equivalent phrase used in one of the amended French versions is "composition applicable à". It would therefore probably be a good idea to use that wording since it already appears in published French versions of the application. These days, correspondence and documents relating to the prosecution of patent applications is/are frequently filed online and available for public inspection. You have the patent number and can therefore look on the Australian Patent Office and WIPO websites for useful background information to the case.

Context? I think the exact meaning of this word depends very much on what this is a patent for? Of course you mustn't give away any confidential details, but can you at least give us a clue? I'm wondering if 'composition' has some literal meaning in term of a type of composite material, for example — or if it refers les literally to the arrangement of, for example, some mechanical components?

Etant donné le contexte limité, le choix de composition me paraît acceptable. Un contexte plus élargi pourrrait nous permettre de proposer d'autres suggestions (formule, structure, agencement...)
