I don't think that hyphenated words are as common in Greek as they are in English. In Greek we tend to make compound words and we don't unite two words by hyphen, except for a few cases (see "η χρηση του ενωτικου").

Please check the Triantafyllidis grammar, more specific the page 28 of the book (use of ενωτικό), and from the page 57 of the book (σύνθετα):

Is it possible as with hyphenated words in English that both can exist and it is merely a sort of preference?

Yes, i forgot to mention i was referring to a male person.

One word without a hyphen is maybe better, in the same sense as Ελληνοαμερικανός, Ελληνοσουηδός etc.
