To distinguish a causal process from a non-causal or "pseudo"-causal process a philosopher (Salmon: 1984) has suggested that causal processes exhibit what he calls a mark-transmission. E.g. the shadow of a moving car intersects with a pole and the shadow changes shape because of that intersection but this mark (the changed shape of the shadow of the car) does not get trasmitted beyond the point of the intersection of the pole - the shadow gets restored to its original shape as soon as the car gets past the pole...
