Change log

Jun 8, 2005 14:16: Rajan Chopra changed "Level" from "Non-PRO" to "PRO"

Votes to reclassify question as PRO/non-PRO:

PRO (3): Balasubramaniam L., keshab, Rajan Chopra

When entering new questions, KudoZ askers are given an opportunity* to classify the difficulty of their questions as 'easy' or 'pro'. If you feel a question marked 'easy' should actually be marked 'pro', and if you have earned more than 20 KudoZ points, you can click the "Vote PRO" button to recommend that change.

How to tell the difference between "easy" and "pro" questions:

An easy question is one that any bilingual person would be able to answer correctly. (Or in the case of monolingual questions, an easy question is one that any native speaker of the language would be able to answer correctly.)

A pro question is anything else... in other words, any question that requires knowledge or skills that are specialized (even slightly).

Another way to think of the difficulty levels is this: an easy question is one that deals with everyday conversation. A pro question is anything else.

When deciding between easy and pro, err on the side of pro. Most questions will be pro.

* Note: non-member askers are not given the option of entering 'pro' questions; the only way for their questions to be classified as 'pro' is for a ProZ.com member or members to re-classify it.

Discussion

Or: Is film ko dekhkar tumhare maata-pita ne kya kaha?
Balasubramaniam L. Jun 8, 2005:
or: Yah film tumhare mata-pita ko kaisi lagi?
Balasubramaniam L. Jun 8, 2005:
May be you could translate it as:Is film ke baare mey tumhare mata-pita ne kya raay jahir ki?
Non-ProZ.com Jun 8, 2005:
the sentence runs "watching this film, what was the reaction of your parents'?" I dont want a very heavy hindi word, would also like to know the urdu equivalent.
Tejinder Soodan Jun 8, 2005:

please see explanation below

You have asked a difficult one indeed. I too have struggled on several occasions for an appropriate equivalent for "reaction" in Hindi.

Dictionaries mention only "pratikriya", and I have found this to be inadequate for my purpose. But then there really doesn't seem to be any alternative.

If your context is Chemistry, then the word "abhikriya" is there, but I assume that is not the word you want.

There is "anukriya" but that is more appropriate for "follow-up".

It would be better to work around the word, if you don't want to use pratikriya. Some examples:

He reacted rather sharply to the comment.
Yah tippani sunkar vah aag baboola ho gaya.

The drug produced a very mild reaction in him.
Dawai ka us par halka sa hi prabhav dekhne me aaya.

His role in the whole affair was rather reactionary.
Is saare mamle mein uski bhoomika kaafi roodivaadi rahi.

Etc.

anukriya could be another word.

Not required.

\'raay\' can be a word from Urdu, though little remote.

2. Yeh film dekhkar tumhAre mAtA pitA nay kyA anubhav kiyA?

3. Is film nay tumhAre mAta pitA par kyA chhAp chhodii?

4. TumhAre mAtA pitA is film say kitne prabhAvit huye?

5. Is film ko dekhne ke bAd tumhare mA(n)-bAp kA radde-amal kyA rahA?

6. Is film ko dekhne ke bAd tumhAre mAtA pitA nay kyA udgAr vyakt kiye?

7. Yeh film tumhAre mAtA pitA ko kitnii janchii?

Of course, some of the above suggestions might be slightly away from the original, but these try to convey the implied sense.
