A subcortical activation was scored if no change in EEG findings was seen but 2 of the following changes occurred: a gross body movement detected with movement sensors, seen as an artifact in the somatic channels (electrocardiographic, EEG, and respiratory parameters), or observed directly; changes in HR (10% of baseline values); or changes in breathing patterns (any change in frequency and/or amplitude). A cortical arousal was scored with the above criteria, with the addition of the occurrence of an abrupt change in EEG ***background frequency*** of 1 Hz, for a minimum of 3 seconds.
