On older engines with adjustable distributors, the distributor could be clocked, or rotated, to adjust ignition (or injection) timing, meaning distributor position was only as accurate as the skills and care of the tuner clocking the distributor. However, determining the exact crankshaft position is ambiguous in terms of the firing order, because crank position by itself says nothing about whether the engine is on the compression or exhaust stroke of a particular cylinder.
