English term

mantle

English to Polish Art/Literary Cinema, Film, TV, Drama
"Extra: The night of the 1939 Oscars, Olivia de Havilland was stunned when
the Best Supporting Actress Award went to her Gone with the Wind co-star Hattie
McDaniel (1895-1952). Olivia ran into the kitchen of the Biltmore Hotel where
the ceremony was being held and started sobbing. Irene Mayer Selznick (1907-
1990), the wife of Gone with the Wind producer David O' Selznick, followed her
backstage and grabbed de Havilland's arm. "Listen you'll have plenty of
chances. Get out there and be gracious."
The actress dried her eyes, composed herself and went backstage smiling to
congratulate McDaniel. Selznick was proven correct; de Havilland went on to
win two Oscars. Meanwhile, Olivia's leading man was also crushed that night;
Clark Gable as Rhett Butler lost to Robert Donat (1905-1958) who played a
British school teacher in Goodbye, M r . Chips. "Don't worry, Pa," Clark's actress
wife Carole Lombard (1908-1942) said to htm as they left the Biltmore.
"Someday we'll have one of those statues on our mantle.""

Votes to reclassify question as PRO/non-PRO:

Non-PRO (1): Ewa Nowicka

When entering new questions, KudoZ askers are given an opportunity* to classify the difficulty of their questions as 'easy' or 'pro'. If you feel a question marked 'easy' should actually be marked 'pro', and if you have earned more than 20 KudoZ points, you can click the "Vote PRO" button to recommend that change.

How to tell the difference between "easy" and "pro" questions:

An easy question is one that any bilingual person would be able to answer correctly. (Or in the case of monolingual questions, an easy question is one that any native speaker of the language would be able to answer correctly.)

A pro question is anything else... in other words, any question that requires knowledge or skills that are specialized (even slightly).

Another way to think of the difficulty levels is this: an easy question is one that deals with everyday conversation. A pro question is anything else.

When deciding between easy and pro, err on the side of pro. Most questions will be pro.

* Note: non-member askers are not given the option of entering 'pro' questions; the only way for their questions to be classified as 'pro' is for a ProZ.com member or members to re-classify it.

Serenadele Jan 20, 2014:
no cóż, mam inne zdanie, na razie :)
George BuLah (X) Jan 20, 2014:

Tytuł oryginalny: My Sister lives on the Mantelpiece.
George BuLah (X) Jan 20, 2014:
Where to put Oscar statuettes on a such a mantel(piece)?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Overmantel.jpg
perhaps, the mirror is a perfect place to glue post-its informing where the statuettes are put in the house

Darius Saczuk Jan 19, 2014:
man·tel also man·tle (mntl)
n.
1. An ornamental facing around a fireplace. Also called regionally mantelpiece.

2. The protruding shelf over a fireplace. Also called mantelpiece, mantelshelf; also called regionally fireboard

Place of distinction, often the central place in a house, which often is the fireplace. The mantlepiece is usually ornate, so it draws everyone's attention. Objects of pride can be displayed on the mantlepiece.
