Quick succession relief (IHTA 1984 section 141) is intended to alleviate cases where the same assets would have been subjected to IHT twice within a short period.
The way it works is that a proportion of the tax paid on the first death is credited against the tax liability on the second death. The proportion is 100% if the second death occurs within one year reducing to 20% on the second death within 5 years.
