English term

SOP

English Bus/Financial Finance (general)
Please note that since we do not manage real property or alternatives, we have assumed that the 11% allocation to real property and infrastructure in the benchmark is mapped 50% UK Equity/50% UK Corporate Bonds, the 2.5% in global private equity is mapped to Global Equity x1.5 and the 1% SOP allocation is mapped to UK Equities.

Clueless (again!) as to what SOP could mean in this context.

Any help is greatly appreciated!

Discussion

Laura Vinti (asker) Jun 6, 2014:
In the end I just left it as it was.
Charles Davis May 29, 2014:
Agree with Donal You'll have to leave it as SOP (I presume it's going into Italian). Maybe you could add a note suggesting a possible meaning. I've agreed with Donal and Polangmar because I think it's certain from the context that it refers to an investment, a fund, though we can't be sure which one.
DLyons May 29, 2014:
It should be just left as an acronym. Especially because it's not entirely clear what it refers to.
Virginia Koolhaas May 28, 2014:
@Laura If you have the chance, the best option is to confirm with/ask your client. There could be many finance-related acronyms that fit in there.

stock option plan

I think it refers to employee's stock option plan

stock option plan
A program within a company whereby employees are allowed to buy a specific number of stock options in the company for a specified amount of time. The options usually have an exercise price equal to the market price at the time the options were given.

Special Opportunities Portfolio

The target allocation to the ‘Special Opportunities Portfolio’ (SOP) is 5% of Main Fund value. Current realistic benchmark allocations for private equity, infrastructure and SOP are 2.5%, 1% and 1% respectively. (...) As can be seen, during the year there has been a substantial switch out of UK Equities, Cash, UK & Overseas Index Linked, and UK Corporate Bonds with a move into Overseas Equities, and Overseas Fixed Interest.

There is a similar term - "Total Opportunities Portfolio" - in the original text (containing the context provided):

agree Charles Davis : Can't be sure, but this is quite likely since it must refer to a fund. Special Opportunities Portfolios are generic (not just pension funds); see e.g. http://www.investcorp.com/ourbusiness/hedgefunds.aspx

The asker's source is online. They are making a sales pitch for investing in high-risk emerging markets and SOP is one of the standard ones - Google "SOP EXTRABONDEUROHEDGED" for example. Polangmar is on the right track, but I can't imagine that Greater Manchester Pension Fund is open to investment from speculative third parties. The fund referred to must be a publicly traded one.
Peer comment(s):

agree Charles Davis : The link to SOP is not clear. // OK, yes, there are Oppenheim funds called SOP, so could be, but I still think a "Special Opportunities Portfolio" is more likely (they're quite widespread, not just pension funds). But it could be right, so I'll change.

Thanks Charles. See SOP EXTRABONDEUROHEDGED for example.// I agree "Special Opportunities Portfolio" is tempting, but I couldn't find any that matched the bill - high-risk, high-return, open to outsiders, (probably emerging markets).
neutral Virginia Koolhaas : Why the acronym then? Not too common/widely extended to put it as an acrnonym. It' not S&P.
9 hrs
In the context, it has to be some specific, well-known, high-risk, high-return investment vehicle. It's in a title, so they want it short.
neutral Yvonne Gallagher : so, what does the acronym mean then?//more than a bit tenuous, no?

S(al)OP(penheim). "stock option plan" would work in many contexts, but not here. And, definitely not "Statement of Position" - sorry :-)
neutral Polangmar : Sal. Oppenheim jr. & Cie. AG & Co. KGaA is a European private bank: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sal._Oppenheim - the original text deals generally with investment and doesn't discuss private banks.

Some one of their SOP funds. It's unclear which.
