I'm not sure if I'm allowed to say this But if you mean something like the “IT asset manager” on http://www.zoho.com/creator/solutions/solutions.html then this is inventory control, and I would say asset and CI are essentially the same thing; AFAIU the only difference is that “asset” is used by the business people (reflecting the view that these are things of value) while “CI” is used by the sysadmins (reflecting the view that these are things to be kept track of).

IF this is in a context of inventory management, then 'asset' is the term used to describe an item of equipment: an office chair, a computer, a steel rolling mill...

These days, big organizations keep a pretty tight track on these things, and use serial numbers, barcodes, tags, special software, etc. to facilitate checking.
