English term
white noise
English
Other
Medical (general)
Some environments are more stimulating than others. A soporific environment is one that makes it easy to fall asleep, or hard to stay alert. Environmental factors which make it easy to doze include comfortable temperature, low light, quiet or low level white noise and a general lack of activity or stimulation. The environment itself is not sufficient to induce sleep. People only sleep during circadian lows or when they have a sleep debt. When a sleep need exists, however, a soporific environment can make it hard to stay awake and be alert.
