What exactly does bad spirits mean in this case?

... if not, and it means 'low morale', we'd usually say 'poor spirits' or 'low spirits', the use of 'bad' would be quite unusual here (by an ENS, at least)

This is very odd, and doesn't sound quite like native English! As M-HH says, if this is from a country where people believe in evil spirits etc., then that might be taken seriously as a factor;...

Where does the text you are translating come from? Voodoo or something similar springs to mind if the area involved is Africa, Haiti etc.

agree Marie-Hélène Hayles : yes, this is certainly a possibility! I didn't think of it myself as I was misled by the voodoo explanation - a native speaker would normally term it "poor spirits".

agree humbird : Lost hope, heartbreak ... in Western (or modern, or main stream) English. We need to remember that India is a country full of tradition, yet English is their official language.
