English term

obstructive breathing

English Medical Medical (general) anesthesia
The most frequent complications of premature tracheal extubation are hypoventilation, apnea, or obstructive breathing, all frequently associated with hypoxemia and hypercarbia.

My question : are they ( hypoventilation, apnea, obstructive breathing ) three distinct disorders or does the author use "obstructive breathing" as a synonym of "apnea", meaning " obstructive sleep apnea"?
If not, what is obstructive breathing? Obstruction as a result of what? Thank you for any information you can provide.

Discussion

Jason Kang Mar 22, 2009:
Hoping to help, I take a sentence from the book I am translating. "No evidence exists indicating that poor diet, lack of exercise, or vitamin deficiencies cause mental illnesses." Is she saying 2 causes because she used 'or' instead of 'and'?
Jason Kang Mar 22, 2009:
In translating specific fields, there are moments when the background knowledge is very helpful. I believe the paragraph is not obscure or indistinct to most of the doctors...
Jason Kang Mar 22, 2009:
As a medical doctor myself, I would say apnea and obstructive breathing are not used to indicate a single condition. If the author is a doctor and liked to mention about a single condition, the author should write 'apnea due to airway obstruction' etc.
Allda (asker) Mar 21, 2009:
If so, there would be only two disorders mentioned then: hypoventilation and apnea; would the author use modifier "all" to refer to them or would (s)he use "both" or no modifier at all?
cmorin Mar 21, 2009:
The author is using apnea and obstructive breathing synonymously in this passage. APNEA, OR OBSTRUCTIVE BREATHING which is a complication of premature extubation because the smooth muscles have not had adequate time to recover from anesthetizing agents.
Ellen Kraus Mar 21, 2009:
No, the two terms are not identical. Apnoea is the temporary standstill of breathing, while obstructive breathing occurs when the bronchial tubes contract and breathing becomes difficult.
Ellen Kraus Mar 21, 2009:
sorry, my answer to your latest question and the advised link got lost when being posted. I am sending it again. you ll find it in the column for the answers.
Ellen Kraus Mar 20, 2009:
the German links in English, or whether your knowledge of German is sufficient.
Ellen Kraus Mar 20, 2009:
sorry \ I sent my explanations in German. If the three types of breathing disorders were different, the author would not have said OR obstructive breathing but AND ob.br.apnoea means insomnia because of obstructive breathing.Let me know whether you need t

obstructive breathing

We can think some of the causes, according to the reason for initial intubation. If infection and profuse secretion was the cause, the secretion can lead to obstructive breathing fater premature extubation. In case of swollen airway mucosa, it can lead to recurrent airway obstruction. Similarly, we can list some of the reasons initally compromize airway patency including external compression, large airway collapse etc.

Yes, the three causes are definitely diffrent with each other. And 'airway collapse' is definitely different from 'obstructive breating', too. :-)
Note from asker:
Thank you very much. So these are DEFINITELY three different things then? You mentioned "airway collapse" as one of the causes. Interestingly, a translator ( doctor) translated "obstructive breathing" as "airway collapse" ( I am proofreading that translation )
Once again, thank you very much ! :-)

Kein problem, ich verstehe Deutsch ganz gut :-)
Do you suggest then that "obstructive breathing" is the same as "apnea" here? "or" is used as a synonym?
