English term

a greater number of fair or poor responses

English Science Medical: Instruments
Context: In a study report for a contact lens care solution,
in the RESULT part: Acceptability Questionaire
There were a greater number of fair or poor responses to the acceptability questions of overall rating, comfort rating, and quality of vision rating in the Investigational Neutralizing Tablet group than in the ULTRACARE Neutralizing Tablet group. However, this difference was less between the two group for acceptability questions of lens cleanliness rating and overall comparisons to pre-study regime.
Question: What does ¡°fair or poor¡± mean here? Fair means good, isn¡¯t it? ¡°greater number of fair or poor responses¡± makes no sense to me.
Thank you!

fair means mediocre or borderline acceptable

A possible scale could be:

Excellent
Good
Fair
Poor

so you see, Fair is less than Good.

Since \'fair and poor\' are the two \'lesser\' possibilities, and \'excellent and good\' would be the \'greater\' possibilities, they are lumping together \'fair and poor\' responses to get an idea of how many people rated the item at approximately 50% satisfaction or less.

So if a majority (greater number, as said in the article) of the responses are \'fair to poor,\' then basically there are more people giving the product a mediocre or low rating than people giving it a good or excellent rating.

agree DGK T-I : in this context 'fair' is "not bad(poor), not good",as Kellyn says ~
