to approve sth

I would like to know the exact meaning of approve in pharmaceutical context. I mean if it´s said that some juices are approved to be used with the drug does it mean that it´s recommended to use them but you can use other juice and there is no danger or you must use only the approved ones? I´m not sure how to translate it in the context as recommendation or that you can only use the listed juices.
Thanks:)

you may use them
When these are approved to be used with the drug, it means that their will be no complications/contra-indications or contra-reactions caused by certain juices.

it has officially been declared safe to use
It's a bit unusual to see juice mentioned in that context I think...
I understand it to mean that the official authority (such as the FDA in the US) has conducted tests and found the juice to be safe to use with that drug. It does not mean that it's recommended to drink the juice with the drug.

: I would have agreed but for the fact that it is more likely to be the pharmaceutical company that did the approving.

unless explicitly stated that you may use other juices, ...
you shall have to restrict your choices to the approved list.

and that is to avoid 'assuming' that the 'other' juices are permitted.

: Were it explicitly stated that you may use others, then those others would be approved! // I did read it, it is also wrong. An approved list does not necessarily entail compulsion to restrict one's choices to it and may be advisory.
