They squatted and rose in unison, this group of mommies, and none of them said a word when I stopped in front of them and grunted, as if I'd been punched.

Discussion

Claire Chapman Dec 21, 2007:
In any case, it was a confrontation of the haves (those with babies) versus the have not (the one without the baby). Without a child, woman didn't fit in. She couldn't face them or the situation of not having a child and left.
Claire Chapman Dec 21, 2007:
These mommies did not offer any expression of care or concern when this woman, obviously in emotional pain, stopped in front of them. It is possible that they knew of her loss and did not know what to say.

None of them reacted with any comment, none asked me if I was okay when I grunted. This aloofness or indifference on their part could be construed as betrayal, depending on the context. I stopped in front of them and made a grunting sound as if I had been "punched", be that a physical hit or betrayed in the figurative sense, yet they showed no reaction.

It's however used figuratively "offended"/"slapped in the face"

agree NancyLynn : I grunted as though in response to being hit (possibly in the stomach)

English term (edited): as if i\'d been punched.

as if I had been hit.

This is literature and/or poetry, so it requires more context. There is a group of beings, mommies most probably meaning "mummies" but not necessarily so. Does the protagonist grunt when he stops in front of them, or does the group of mommies grunt? At any rate, to be punched is to have been hit or struck in the physical sense (MGhiuzelli) or to be brought up short (as if -- M. Powers). It very much depends on the rest of the document.
