None of them reacted with any comment, none asked me if I was okay when I grunted. This aloofness or indifference on their part could be construed as betrayal, depending on the context. I stopped in front of them and made a grunting sound as if I had been "punched", be that a physical hit or betrayed in the figurative sense, yet they showed no reaction.

It's however used figuratively "offended"/"slapped in the face"

English term (edited):
as if i\'d been punched.
as if I had been hit.
This is literature and/or poetry, so it requires more context. There is a group of beings, mommies most probably meaning "mummies" but not necessarily so. Does the protagonist grunt when he stops in front of them, or does the group of mommies grunt? At any rate, to be punched is to have been hit or struck in the physical sense (MGhiuzelli) or to be brought up short (as if -- M. Powers). It very much depends on the rest of the document.
